The wooden keys are suspended along the top and pitch matched with calabash resonators suspended underneath.

Holes drilled in the calabashes are covered with web material from a spider nest which function as a mirliton or "buzzer". Striking a key produces a pitch that is isolated and amplified by the calabashes and the spider nest mirlitons capture the overtones with a buzzing sound - essentially an acoustic distortion box.
