The role of atsimevu is played by my right hand on two different pitched toms, a snare drum with the snares turned off and a pair of closed hi-hat cymbals. The role of gankogui is moved to the left foot and the kaganu rhythm is eliminated from the orchestration. The rhythm notated above is used to tell the supporting drums to play the basic rhythm. It also instructs the dancers to execute a certain movement. I am demonstrating it in a two bar loop for the purpose of practice.
